Patente de Corso was a document issued by the authorities of a country by which privateers had permission to raid and capture ships of enemy nations.

Privateers were private individuals or groups who were often motivated by the prospect of financial gain, as they were entitled to a share of the value of any captured enemy vessels and cargo. They operated independently of the regular navy and were not considered to be part of the military. However, they were granted certain legal protections and privileges under the authority of the Patente de Corso.
